RIP to my great-great-great-great grandfather, who died on this day 111 years ago. He enlisted in the Confederate Army a few months after his 19-year-old son ran off to join, was captured leading a picket on the eve of Chickamauga, spent the rest of the War at Rock Island in Illinois, and died bent and infirm from the bullet in his belly. He was the last of our McCullough line born in South Carolina, his family migrating to newly settled lands in Georgia when he was a teenager. His dad died during the journey. He was the first McCullough in America to live past his 30s, and the last in my line to reach 70.
